Did you know that bedbugs emit pheromones that dogs can smell?

And in the same way that you teach a drug dog to find the scent of drugs, you teach a bedbug dog to find the scent of bedbug pheromones.

What are bedbugs?

A bed bug is a skin beetle and not a louse. And a common misconception is that bed bugs live in walls, which they do not. The English name “bed bugs” is therefore more accurate, as they prefer to live in beds, sofas and armchairs and as close to these places as possible. Bed bug bites can cause a red, itchy rash, but around 40% of the population do not react to the bites.

Used furniture

Bringing bed bugs home via second-hand furniture is always a risk, but you should be more careful with upholstered furniture, beds, headboards and bedside tables. Bringing bedbugs home in second-hand clothes, knick-knacks and crockery is generally nothing to worry about.

Why hire a bed bug dog?

Finding bedbug infestations at the earliest possible stage means minimizing the risk of spread and clean-up time, which also results in saving both time and money.

1. Eliminate or confirm suspicion

Do you suspect bed bugs? Living in the dark can be incredibly mentally draining, leading to sleepless nights and endless cleaning and searching. We recommend enlisting the help of a good bed bug dog to quickly eliminate or confirm your suspicions. We strongly advise against starting a cleanup process before confirming that it is actually bedbugs. The vast majority of suspicions we encounter result in the customer being told that they do not have bed bugs.

Bedbugs have an amazing ability to hide in the smallest of places. The key to a quick and easy clean-up is to find bed bug infestations before they spread to several apartments or rooms. The dogs’ amazing sense of smell means that they can find the occasional bed bug that is easy to miss during a visual inspection. Spread checks are usually carried out when there is a major infestation of bed bugs in a particular flat or room or if there is a suspicion that more flats are affected. Having an overall view of the total spread is important to be able to start decontamination in several places at the same time. It can take up to 2-3 months before you notice that you have bedbugs, especially in cases where you do not react to the bites.

A pest technician has about a 40-60% chance of finding a trace of an early bedbug infestation. Under the right conditions, a well-trained road dog and handler have an accuracy of about 90%.

Why dogs can find bed bugs

Dogs have around 300 million olfactory receptors, compared to humans’ five million. This makes their sense of smell over 10,000 times better than ours. That’s why search dogs are used to find everything from drugs to cancer – and of course bedbugs.

Bed bugs emit specific scents in the form of different pheromones. These pheromones the dogs are trained to find and mark. The dogs are also trained to ignore dead bed bugs and old droppings.
